Although radio frequency identification has many advantages, it also has some disadvantages. RFID is more expensive than barcodes, the radio waves cannot be read through metal or liquid components, the waves can be interfered by cell phone towers but more concerning matters include privacy and security issues. Because a person can be tracked using and RFID chip, they may feel that their personal privacy is being invaded. Merchandise ordered that is equipped with a RDFI tag is tracked to the buyer, whose personal information such as address can then be exposed. This makes people less willing to accept the technology. Also, security can be a prospective problem because tag hacking and cloning are real possibilities. If a person finds a way to intercept the radio wave and gather information then problems such as fraud or information corruption can occur. This is a potential drawback for the various users of RFID technology.
